An at-home reproductive health screening device for low risk patients, enabling wider access and promoting agency for women.

Women's health is a subject that is easily overlooked and underestimated. Many women are unwilling to go to the hospital for regular health checks. Verna provides a brand new solution for them. We aim to help women solve problems from front to end. With the guidance of the APP, users are able to use mobile health devices to conduct multiple self-examinations at home, and at the same time, they can view the results of each examination on the APP and contact the doctor.

Vision

Our goal is to increase the normalcy of having regular and frequent health checks of a woman's reproductive area to ensure her goals are not hindered by avoidable problems.

How It Works

The System

The Verna system is divided into 3 main parts: a mobile health device that helps women perform various tests at home; a home testing kit that women use to collect their sample and to ship to the lab; an application that enables women to follow test guidelines, view test results, and contact doctors, etc.

The Product(s)

Verna is a comprehensive diagnostic system that includes a handheld device that performs the sample collection using single-use wands and a rapid return system for prompt lab-tested results.

Feature 01

Verna wands have an inflatable sample collection head that gently collects cells and fluids for the handheld device and integrated application to perform diagnostics. The screen on the handheld device and the mobile application guides the user through each part of the process for a smooth experience.

Feature 02

Verna is simple to use by design. Users are able to operate the handheld; attach the wand; collect samples; and secure the contents with one hand.

Feature 03

An exploded view shows how the device is assembled and how each component is vital to ensuring the device’s functionality.

Feature 04

Verna APP provides support in various aspects of women’s health. It acts as a controller for the device. After connecting with Verna mobile health device, it’ll guide users through the whole process of performing a test. Verna’s AI will also help users perform early stage diagnostic and give them proper recommendations. In the APP, users are also able to view reports, contact doctors, read articles, etc.

"Our company was looking for a unique and thoughtful approach to simplifying the world through the eyes of a child. We are throughly impressed with the Nuri concept and look forward to introducing this new product to the world." -Jini Zopf

Using Verna Handheld Device

Verna was designed with ergonomics in mind. Function and form was carefully combined to create a friendly, approachable smart device that enables ease of use. We designed Verna to be used with one hand and for the overall process to be as minimal as possible.

Our Process

We believe a good design emerges from users’ needs and pinpoints in real life. In the early stage ideation process, we dig deep into the current process of gynecological health examinations and women’s needs. Verna’s goal is to transform this invasive and unpleasant experience into a more comfortable, user-friendly experience.

Proof of Concept

We test the inflation method for sample collection by creating a model of the vaginal canal and cervix. We applied adhesive to verify if the balloon comes into contact with the interior surfaces and the results show that it was successful

Form Development

We sketched, modeled, and finally printed prototypes to understand proportion, surfacing, and details. We applied the best features of each model and combined them into one functional form.

Color Ideation

The overall color choice for the system is to give users a sense of warm and soft feeling. Let users not think that this is a medical device, more like a product that can be used at home, and help them not feel nervous and afraid in the process of testing. APP's Color palette is also designed to help users maintain a relaxed attitude during use and give users confidence in using it.

Verna APP highlight features

Verna APP comes with Verna mobile health device. Users will download the APP after purchasing Verna device. When users start a test, they’re able to follow the voice guidance in the APP through the sample collecting process. The APP will visualize the test result and make it easy to understand for users. With Verna, users are able to perform various tests confidently and pleasantly.
