We know that Interplay is a furniture startup, part of our jobs to imagine the identity and embody interplay’s values, what we think INTERPLAY stand for is that it is a young brand, deeply care about sustainability, we want to launch the first furniture line that promoting people’s wellness using sustainable materials. And more than that, the other reason that we think this launch will stand out from others is that the design is tangible and interactive and it is playful to use.

Vision

Proposing a lifestyle for people to live free from digital lure by focusing on people's inner world and having conversations with themselves so that they can resolve their daily hassles and negative emotions.

How It Works

3-01 Me. Lamp

The lighting piece illuminates the spatial boundary between disconnection and connection which helps people unplug effortlessly from digital products.

3-02 Me. Mirror

Thoughts and actions can reshape how people perceive themselves. The idea of the mirror is to provide a space for self conversation, to help users reinforce positive thoughts and help users to start taking actions to make changes.

3-03 Me. Chair

Sit on, choose duration, then guided meditation will start. Chair has a built-in stereo sound speaker system to provide a more immersive experience. The Chair guides people to meditate by focusing inward.

"Our company was looking for a unique and thoughtful approach to simplifying the world through the eyes of a child. We are throughly impressed with the Nuri concept and look forward to introducing this new product to the world." -Jini Zopf

Ecosystem

These three furniture pieces work the best when they are used together. Each of them would either promote usage of the other two pieces, or assist with using the other two pieces. This ecosystem provides a cohesive and effortless experience to users. Even though they work the best when together, users could also buy and use them separately and still have good experience with each of them.

Process

We take deep considerations on materials and interactions for designing this collection. We have gone through many iterations. We want to choose material that is sustainable and also fits our design vision. For interactions, we consider streamlined interactions is crucial for designing a furniture collection.

Material

The choice of materials was made with sustainability in mind. All control sliders and handles are made of a material called zirconia, a highly durable ceramic material that can be used for injection molding and comes in a range of colors and finishes. All the stone parts are Lapitec, a 100% natural mineral material that is 100% recyclable. The shade and lens are carbon neutral glass and frosted recycled PET, both of which are 100% recyclable, and the glass is produced using energy from solar and hydrogen, which reduces its carbon footprint. The wood is FSC certified maple and the stain is an eco-friendly wood stain. All the cables are made of bio-polyolefin. This is an alternative to traditional plastics that adds 25-20% more natural renewable content to reduce the carbon footprint.

Streamline Interaction

The signature interaction is the red slider. Red slider works just like the old dial phone, it slides back while releasing. This tangible interaction feels more fun to use. To echo our design philosophy which is living free from digital lure, we use Touch Wood technology to build the interface under the wooden and stone surface. Different from digital screens, users would have more sensory experience when interacting with these natural rough surfaces.

What's Next

If we had more time, we would make more mockups to test and iterate on each product. Develop an initial business plan for the set of products. Further unify the interfaces of the three products.
